OUR PROJECT / THE VINEYARDS
Javier Vasallo launched his most personal endeavor in the spring of 2010, following 40 years as a top-level executive in large, American multinational companies.
His Galician heritage and his passion for wine took him to Leiro, located in the Avia River valley. Regarded by many as "The Golden Mile", this is the heart of the Ribeiro.
Here, he bought a magnificent farm, "A Fervenza", with its seven south facing terraces.
The property has a small waterfall, (fervenza in Galician), with a fully operating, nearly 200-year-old watermill. Hence, the origin of the farm’s name.
Grapevines have been cultivated in these lands for hundreds of years, giving international fame to the Ribeiro wines.
At the beginning of 2011, a total overhaul of the vineyards began by removing the old Palomino and Garnacha varieties and replacing them with native strains of Treixadura, Loureira, Albariño and Godello. Later, the estates of "Eira do Mouro", "Rubial", "Os Casares" and "A Grova" joined the flagship, A Fervenza. All are south facing, centenary vineyards replanted with the aforementioned native varieties.
Currently the property has 1.8 hectares of the highest quality vineyards.
Xulia, born and raised among the Ribeiro vineyards, and her team are in charge of “caring for” and controlling our farms. They employ an utmost respect for the environment with the aim of obtaining the best grapes in the area.
In September 2014, we experimented with our first harvest of just 500 kilos. We fermented in a stainless steel tank and later, the wine aged on its fine lees in a 300-liter French oak barrel for 6 months. The following May, we produced 371 bottles. The result was an exquisite blend that the project team, our family and friends still enjoy.
The first vintage we commercialized was that of 2015. At the beginning of the summer of 2016, it entered the market.
